Listed items will not be marked down during the listing duration. Albert Coles was a silversmith who worked from 1835 to 1877. His career spanned the transformation of silversmithing from an art learned through long apprenticeship and practice to the age of industrial mechanized production. The mustard ladle offered here is a hand made piece. It bears the familiar mark of a diamond surrounded by 2 circles of Albert Coles. The way the piece is designed and constructed places it early in the history of the firm, sometime before the firm was acquired by Schiebler. The piece was scribed on a sheet of silver; it was then cut. The combination of mostly handwork and hand engraving, but machine work on the twisted handle makes this a transitional piece. The material is coin silver. Coin silver is a category of old American silver that sort of falls apart when definition time comes around. The old story is that people had their wealth in the form of coins. They would take some coins to the local silversmith, have the coins melted to form useful objects like tea sets and forks, and use these in lieu of a bank, which did not exist at the time. Generally this was true for the period before the American Revolution. But even then, there were urban silversmiths who used ingot and, after 1825, rolled silver. The usual suggestion is that coin silver is the same fineness as the coinage, 900/1000. But some of the urban smiths worked in what was called “English” standard 925/1000. And some used Spanish coins which tended to be on the 875/1000 (84 out of 96 zlotniks) or seven bits. The British laws prohibited production of anything that would compete with things made in England, so the American silversmiths used a different standard to get around the law. Anyway, coin or as it is sometimes called “American Standard” was made well into the end of the 19th century. In 1863, major makers began to use the Sterling mark which has become the accepted form for silver. Mustard is a trick to serve as it stains everything it touches. So care is needed in moving it from container to food. To serve mustard, there is the mustard ladle, which was invented in the 1700s. This is a small bowl on a long handle. The bowl is small because mustard is not used in large quantities. The handle is long, both to keep the user from getting stains on clothing or skin, and to reach into the mustard pot while leaving enough handle to grasp. Some mustard ladles have a small bulge about half way down the handle to hold them at the notch on the mustard pot’s lid. Because mustard is corrosive, the bowl should never be left immersed in mustard; rather it needs to hang above the condiment. I polish all silver before listing on eBay. This not is a piece of new silver. It shows the patina of as much as 170 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is an ornate P monogram on the front of the handle. Silver is softly lustrous. The pattern is crisp and clear. This mustard ladle has been carefully used and well cared for.
