Up for bid is a magnetic dartboard from the early 1970s (I’m guessing ’73-’74.) I was given this new when a child, and had it complete until I gave it to one of my sons. The four darts disappeared as well as one of the yellow plastic score dials. When my kids were done with it, it went to work with me and hung on my office wall as an art/conversation piece for several years. The original ‘darts’ were yellow in color and had flat 1” dia. magnets under the circular base. They tapered to a very narrow hole into which was inserted a red feather. A terrible design, it was easier to toss rather than throw them. I mention this because there is a circular dent to the metal in the shape of one of these darts, which I seem to recall being responsible for. The @ 13″ x 11.5″ red plastic frame holds a 10″ x 10.375″ sheet of metal. The original red cord is attached to the top for hanging. The only manufacturing mark is on the upper center rear plastic frame, being the words “West Germany”. What’s unique about this board is the illustration featuring American Indians. In the upper left is a war-paint-wearing brave with his weapons. The upper right features an Indian chief with two pipes. Across the bottom of the board is an Indian about to throw yet another tomahawk at a blonde-haired white man tied to a totem pole, while other Indians sit watching in the background among their wigwams. What is unusual is that there is no cavalry riding in to the rescue, no cowboy waving a gun or Indian being shot, no indication at all of salvation for the white guy. We have no idea why this guy is tied up. Is he a soldier? Is he a criminal? Does he deserve what’s happening? Even as a kid, I never understood who was the bad guy in this scene. Is there a bad guy? The Indians at the top have placid looks on their faces, almost like portraits. That alone indicates a bias in the Indian’s favor, right? Or, as they overlap the “25” score ring, are they part of the target? The captive also overlaps the scoring ring; is he, too, a target? Maybe the manufacturer didn’t look twice at this before production. I mean, I don’t think anybody threw tomahawks at a skillfully carved totem pole, and this board was made by people living in Europe. Maybe you’ll say it’s just a toy, and I’m reading too much into it. Maybe it means nothing at all… but I think that some unnamed designer let the Indians win this one. The price I set reflects the uniqueness of this toy. I will post it to you via USPS Ground Advantage to the continental US only.
