ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is a Beautiful Signed Vintage 1940 Original Color Aquatint Etching titled “Les Vieux Saules” (Translates: “The Old Willow”), by the well known listed artist ‘Paul Emile Lecomte’ (French, 1877-1950), whose hand written in pencil signature appears lower right in the outer plate margin area. See brief artist biography below. We have other Lecomte original signed etchings listed, so please have a look! Publisher & Print Info: The publisher’s copyright, name & location, ‘© Paris Etching Society NY, USA’, appears printed upper right in the image corner area. The art entrepreneur & publisher Sydney Zoltan Lucas’s circular logo with his initials inside ‘SZL’ (sometimes spelled Sidney), appears printed lower left in the plate margin with the inventory number ‘57’ just to the left of it. Lucas arrived from Paris in the 1920’s and formed the Camille Lucas Publishing Company and the Paris Etching Society. He traveled to Europe several times a year to commission prints by primarily French & Flemish artists and if not signed & numbered limited editions most runs of the etchings were supposedly lower runs between 350 and 500 prints only. Lecomte was a member of the Paris Art Society circa 1930-40 and many of his etchings were published with the Society. Our Etching was published & copyrighted January 8, 1940 from research with the Catalog of Copyright information online. ‘Made in France’, as appears faintly stamped in purple ink on the back of the piece. Size & Condition: The size with margins is 19-7/8” x 25-5/8”, Etching image size is 17-11/16” x 22-15/16”. The Etching is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with great color & tones and crisp linework. This Etching has been in a drawer amongst other etchings & engravings since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time—it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed. No Color Fade! Simply Beautiful! There are only two very tiny & completely negligible outer margin edge tears on the top edge far left & far right (1/8” & 3/16” respectively) and are repaired from behind with archival tape for protection, and are negligible since the outer margins can easily be matted & framed out. Extremely minimal slight & small crescent-creases here & there in the image area which are only visible from behind and not even really worth mentioning, and one very slight 5-3/8” long diagonal crease going through the lower right image area (which isn’t really noticeable at all) which extends through the lower right & bottom right outer margin areas, and is also not worth mentioning. Extremely minimal & extremely faint foxing specks (less than a handful or so) scattered here & there on the sheet and aren’t really noticeable at all and not even really worth mentioning either. Minimal small & slight dog-ear creasing in the outer margin corners—also negligible. Minimal outer margin edge wear with a few dents & dings here & there—also negligible. No real noticeable toning of the piece from age amidst the beige-cream color of the paper itself. This etching would make a wonderful addition to any Paul-Emile Lecomte, Paris Etching Society or art collection. This beautiful vintage etching has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. Brief Artist Biography: Paul-Emile Lecomte (French, 1877-1950) was born in Paris on October 29, 1877. As the son of the early nineteenth century artist, Paul was brought up in an environment that revered art and his father took special care to teach his son and develop his artistic talent. Desiring to learn more about the art, Paul-Emile received further schooling at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. There he was taught by Cormon and continued to develop his technique and style. When his training was completed, Paul received the opportunity to take a government position. He was to be employed by the Ministere de la Marine and he continued his painting outside of work. He became a member of the Salon des Artistes Francais and every year he would exhibit his work at the Salon. He continued to receive praise and recognition for his artistry and in 1902, one of his most beautiful paintings won the Gold Medal. Working in both oils and watercolors, Paul would often use soft, muted colors to create paintings that had a tranquil and peaceful quality to them. He was known to have painted landscapes, portraits, and seascapes. Paul-Emile Lecomte died in 1950. (Source: renoirinc, E. Benezit Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs.)
