Charge Sensitive Amplifier for Photomultiplier PMT tube works fine for audio cart based MCA in amateur DIY Gamma Ray Spectroscopy easy to setup, not need any special adjustments PMT Pre-Amplifier Unit: Improved and miniature charge sensitive pre-amplifier for amateur gamma spectroscopy Pulse Height Analysis. The amplifier can work with Positive or Negative PMT high voltage configuration. Default preset is for Positive polarity HV. The output of the amplifier is compatible with computer MIC input or Line input and can be used with freeware like PRA, Theremino or BecqMonitor. You can adjust PMT pulse duration from ~50uS up to ~250uS. For better spectroscopy results please use 24bit audio cart. The board has excellent results with less than 9% FWHM on 24bit audio cart and count rate of the tested samples less than 1000 cps. If your tested sample has higher count rate you can increase the distance between the probe and the sample. Adjust amplification factor by adjusting high voltage level on tube. Have any questions? Electrical circuit is not included. Setup: Use included diagram to wire the module to PMT and power supply. Set HV to the minimum and slowly rise HV on PMT tube, check amplifier pulses on SMA output. Adjust HV to get acceptable amplification before signal from higher energy gets into clipping. Adjust 1M potentiometer to set RC time of the pulse. Usually audio card based MCA require 100uS duration for each pulse. If you do not have oscilloscope you can do same adjustment with audio card software like “Theremino Audio Examples”.
