The tree you will receive will be between these ranges of size as there will be slight differences from the photos in the listing as no two plants are the same. They will be guaranteed vibrant and healthy and ready for transplanting. We do not ship with the pot as the pot allows for too much soil moisture evaporation. It will be securely adhered to the package wall for the safest shipping method possible. PLEASE BE ADVISED: From October to March, we ship these plants in their dormant state. This means they will have no leaves. The stem will be strewn with buds for this coming spring’s growth. If you live in a southern state, these will push new growth upon planting them as dormancy is dependent on hours of daylight and temperature. We are located in New York State and temperatures can differ drastically around the country. Please contact us with any questions on dormancy. We do send dormant planting instructions with every order. General Description: A traditional hardwood forest tree largely known for being the source of maple syrup. It’s also a wonderful shade tree. Hardiness Zone: 3 to 8 Maintenance: Medium Mature Height: 40 to 115 feet Mature Width: 30 to 40 feet Plant Details: Growth Habit: Slow growing, upright, with a dense, rounded crown. Leaf Structure: Palmate with 5 lobes and borne in opposites pairs. Fall colors range from bright yellow to fluorescent red-orange. Stem Structure: Young color is green then turns to deep brown to grey. Bark Structure: Shaggy bark on older trees but smooth bark on younger trees. No special care needed. Fun Fact: Maple tapping can be traced back to the native Americans. They would place heated stones in a holding reservoir to slowly boil down the sap into a syrup. A process that took patience, the process hasn’t changed much over the years. It’s a slow task that has a sweet reward. General Notes: They can live to a ripe old age of 300 years. This is a common timber tree. It’s been used for bowling alleys and bowling pins, basketball courts, baseball bats, musical instruments, sporting goods, pool cues, gun stocks, and flooring to name a few. “Maples, particularly Sugar Maple, are among the leading furniture woods. This species is used for flooring, boxes and crates, and veneer. Some trees develop special grain patterns, including Birdseye maple with dots suggesting the eyes of birds, and curly and fiddleback maple, with wavy annual rings. Such variations in grain are in great demand. The boiled concentrated sap is the commercial source of maple sugar and syrup, a use colonist learned from the Indians. Each tree yields between 5 and 60 gallons of sap per year; about 32 gallons of sap makes 1 gallon of syrup or 4 1/2 pounds of sugar.” (Knopf, Little, 580) GROW YOUR OWN SUGAR BUSH OR TIMBER LOT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. The great sugar maple is a sight to be seen. Their grace can satisfy the harshest of demeanors. But their beauty is not their key interest, it is the sap that flows through their veins. Each spring farmers go into the woods and harvest the sap to boil into Maple syrup. Location, Location, Location!!! Depending on how well the tree grows will determine the amount of sap produced. The bigger the canopy the higher the sugar content and volume of sap produced. Hardwoods typically produce a higher amount of sugar in their sap. We grow everything organically with a beneficial insect program. We do not use chemical fertilizers, pesticides or fungicides. We use a preventive program for pests with the use of Ladybugs, Green Lacewings, Praying Mantis, and Predatory Mites to battle soft bodied bugs and Nematodes in the soil to combat any soil dwelling pests. Acidic soil has a pH of 1 to 6.5. Neutral soil has a pH of 6.6 to 7.3. Alkaline soil has a pH of 7.4 to 14.
