Vintage 1980s, Soviet Afghan War PV KGB DShMG Border Guard Beret Berezka. The border guard of the USSR took an active part in the Afghan war (1979–1989) as part of the general military contingent of the Soviet Union. The main role of these units was to protect the state border, control the movement of weapons and militants across the border, and maintain security on important transport routes. The main tasks of border troops in Afghanistan: Border control: Their task was to prevent the infiltration of Afghan insurgents (mujahideen) through the borders of the USSR, in particular from the territory of Afghanistan to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Security of communications: Ensuring security on the transport routes (highways and railways) along which the supplies of Soviet troops and logistical support went. Intelligence operations: Border guards participated in intelligence and special operations to fight the Mujahideen, and also had the task of identifying the routes through which various prohibited goods were transported. Participation in combat operations: They participated in direct combat operations together with regular Soviet units, performing both independent operations and supporting army forces.
