Fantastic rare find. This is a WWI Canvas officer’s garment bag that belonged to Captain W.H. Harnisch who served in the 166th 42 Division in France during WWI. The 42 Division, also called the Rainbow Division was the 4th unit to land in France. It was assembed in August 1917 at Camp Mills, NY, four months after the American entry into World War I. The 42nd arrived overseas to the Western Front of Belgium and France in November 1917, one of the first of the AEFs to arrive (American Expeditionary Forces). The division was made up of soldiers from 26 states and as a resutl was designated the Rainbow Division. This bag belongedd to Capt. W.H. Harnisch who was originally from Syracuse, NY. He graduated from the University of Maryland school of dentistry in 1917. He was born in 1892 and died in 1952, and he served in the Dental Corp, US Army Signal Corp of the Rainbow Division. The bag measures 50″ by 26 1/2″. Overall good condition but the wooden dowel rod is missing from the top and there is some water staining and surface soil is evident.
